Dog team has a close encounter with a herd of Muskox on a trail near Nome, Alaska.

Photographed in 2007 by Heather Williams, Melissa Owens (2005 Jr. Iditarod Champion) was on a routine training run with her dogs when she suddenly spotted an adult Musk ox, but before she could get her team turned around, an entire family of Musk Oxen came out of the bushes and charged her team. With anxious dogs barking and a few novice dogs in her team, the commotion caused the Musk Ox to charge a second time...and then a third time! Fortunately, “bluff charges” were all they were provoked to do and Melissa was able to get her team off the line and back into her truck without any injuries.
